Several efforts are working to separate oil spills from water. One solution is to develop functional water and oil separator with high separation efficiency and filtration speed. One of the functional materials is a filtration material. The base of filtration material that is often found in everyday life is in the form of sheets, namely paper. Modification of the paper surface is required to separate two liquids with different polarities. In this study, water and oil-separator from a paper were developed. Crabgrass as raw material for paper is processed into pulp using the caustic soda method. 5% NaOH solution was used as the pulping solution. The crabgrass paper has a tear strength equivalent to the tear strength of commercial paper, which is 7 mN.m2/g. With these advantages, paper made from crabgrass was developed as a water and oil separation paper. Crabgrass paper modification using PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) / GA (glutaraldehyde) solution. GA functions as a crosslinker between PVA and lignocellulosic components on the surface of crabgrass paper. The crosslink evidence was proven by measuring the degree of crosslinking and FTIR characterization. PVA/GA coating produces a hydrophobic-oleophilic paper surface with a water contact angle of up to 98o. The hydrophobic-oleophilic surface of the paper retains water and allows oil to pass through the paper. Coating with PVA/10% GA composition produces the most optimal water and oil separation efficiency. Meanwhile, 20 ml is the most optimal volume of PVA/GA solution and produces a separation efficiency of up to 100% and this percentage holds its value up to 10 times the filtration cycle. text
