EFFECTS OF UREA FORMALDEHYDE ADHESIVE CONTENT ON CHARACTERISTICS OF PARTICLEBOARD MADE FROM SENGON WOOD (FALCATARIA MOLUCCANA) AND WULUNG BAMBOO (GIGANTOCHLOA ATROVIOLACEA), SUPERVISING LECTURER

The use of fast-growing tree like sengon wood and the use of wulung bamboo have been done as alternative for natural forest wood. The processing of sengon wood and wulung bamboo creating wastes. The processing of sengon wood and wulung bamboo creating wastes. That processing wastes can be use as material for particleboard. Content/concentration of adhesive have effect on the quality of the particleboard. This research is aiming to obtain the characteristics of urea formaldehyde based particleboard made from sengon wood and wulung bamboo built upon different adhesive content and material composition. The resulting particleboard is 35 x 35 x 1.2 cm sized with target density of 0.6 g/cm3 using different adhesive content (10%, 15%, and 20% of materials dry-weight) and material composition (100% sengon, 50% sengon 50% wulung, and 100% wulung), hot-pressed at 130? for 10 minutes at 2 MPa pressure. Quality of particleboard observed on physical properties (moisture content, density, thickness swelling, and water absorption) and mechanical properties (MOE, MOR, internal bond, screw holding power) in accordance to JIS A 5908:2003 standards. Results of this research showed that particleboard has value of 4.8%-8% moisture content, 0.47-0.62 g/cm3 density, 49%-137% water absorption, 4.9%-19.7% thickness swelling, 371.93—39,078.02 kg/cm2 MOE, 14,65—96,9 kg/cm2 MOR, 1.29—6.11 kg/cm2 internal bond, and 23.2—67.93 kg screw holding power thus 100% wulung bamboo and 20% adhesive content particleboard has the best score of physical and mechanical properties and fulfilled JIS A 5908:2003 standards. text
