A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE APPLICATION OF A-THREE-BLADE SAVONIUS WIND TURBINE FOR AN MRT FLYOVER RAILWAY IN JAKARTA

Due to geographical reasons, Indonesia has low wind speed (1.3-6.3 m/s), especially in urban areas such as Jakarta (2.8-3.35 m/s) [28]. It is an issue since 3.3-3.8 m/s wind speed is required to start a wind turbine and 13.88-16.67 m/s to utilize the full capacity. This results in a lack of utili...

It is an issue since 3.3-3.8 m/s wind speed is required to start a wind turbine and 13.88-16.67 m/s to utilize the full capacity. This results in a lack of utilization of wind energy in Indonesia [5]. This thesis proposes an idea to generate more wind speed, by incorporating a moving vehicle in the form of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Jakarta, and a high altitude, using a flyover track. The wind energy harvesting is using a Savonius Wind Turbine based on the suitability of the conditions of Indonesia [18], [19]. The specifications of the Savonius Wind Turbine itself are based on the literature studies and the simulated performance parameters using ANSYS Fluent. The feasibility of this idea is analyzed based on the power generation, the safety & maintenance, and the cost & benefit of the whole idea if it was to be installed. The result shows that the idea is feasible, but there are a few compromises due to the limitations of the location. There are 260 Savonius Wind Turbine units to be installed along the track between Lebak Bulus - Fatmawati Stations, with 31,749 kWh monthly power generated. The installation will cost around Rp4,139,113,060, with 58,095% of Lebak Bulus monthly electricity consumption that could be covered with the turbine’s generated power. The monthly saved money would be Rp42,797,263 and it would take 8 years to reach break-even. In terms of safety & maintenance, it would at least require a twice-a-year maintenance schedule [38] and safety issues can be mitigated with a scheduled check-up. text
