Tretinoin can be used as a topical antioxidant agent that can delay skin aging process. One of the efforts that can be used to overcome the poor solubility and stability of tretinoin, was to develop an oilin-water nanoemulsion dosage form. This study aimed to characterize the tretinoin nanoemulsion formulation and evaluate the antioxidant activity. The formula of tretinoin nanoemulsion was made using tretinoin, virgin coconut oil (VCO), surfactants Kolliphor RH 40 and Kolliphor EL, cosurfactants PEG 400 and propylene glycol, as well as distilled water using an ultraturrax and sonicator equipment. The best nanoemulsion formula obtained in this study consisted of tretinoin, VCO, Kolliphor RH 40, PEG 400, and distilled water. The nanoemulsion had yellow and translucent appearance, 211.25 ± 12.64 nm globule size, 0.349 ± 0.032 polydispersity index, viscosity was 1.75 ± 0.03 cP, pH level was 5.57 ± 0.06, and zeta potential was 44.35 mV. Tretinoin and tretinoin nanoemulsion showed weak antioxidant activity in the antioxidant test using DPPH with IC50 value 454.94 ± 6.76 ppm and 388.06 ± 3.55 ppm respectively. The remaining concentration of tretinoin in the nanoemulsion formula after storage at room temperature in 35 days was 89,50%, while at 40?C in 28 days was 28.79%. The preparation of tretinoin in the form of nanoemulsion cannot be used to increase the stability of tretinoin against environmental influences. text
