Summary: | Adaptive clothing is one of the media to optimize the living conditions of people
with dementia (PwD) which can solve the problem of that is able to solve problems,
facilitate independence, assist caregivers in caretaking, and is adapted to the
physical and psychological conditions of PwD. This research uses a qualitative
research method with an exploratory approach through Anthropology through
Design (AtD). AtD is used to generate anthropological knowledge about social and
cultural phenomena through design activities due to the lack of discussion of ODD
anthropology in Indonesia. This research produces adaptive clothing with a closure
system that facilitates needs, conveniences, and can be accepted in the social setting
(covering up disabilities). Three caregivers and three PwD respondents
participated for measurement and observation. The data recorded by the digital
camera was subjected to 2D video record analysis by capturing it into frames. The
PwD were directed to perform movements to determine the system, type, and range
of PwD towards the closure. In this study, the anthropological mapping of PwD in
Indonesia was elaborated with measurement data as a basis for recommendation
of adaptive clothing design. The research showed that the suitable clothing to
promote independence for people with dementia (PwD) does not need to have
overly complex features or systems, but can be as simple as paying attention to:
appropriate sizing, such as pattern size and closure size; the type, placement, and
system of closures that PwD are familiar with or can recognize easily based on
memory; clothing styles, such as without armscye and pocketless; sweat-wicking
and cool, non-textured, soft materials; and visually normal-looking clothing to
increase self-esteem. |
