METAL DISTRIBUTION IN RIVER SEDIMENT FROM COAL MINE ACTIVITY (CASE STUDY: LATI RIVER, EAST KALIMANTAN PROVINCE)

Coal mining activities produce acid mine drainage (AMD) which contains various heavy metals that can cause pollution to river ecosystems, especially the accumulation of heavy metals in river sediments. This study aims to determine the distribution of heavy metal contamination (Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, Ni)...

This study aims to determine the distribution of heavy metal contamination (Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, Ni) in Lati River sediments, East Kalimantan Province as drainage from the mine waste water treatment systems effluent. Metal concentrations were measured by the near acid digestion on ICP-MS. The concentration of heavy metals in the sediment was compared with the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) and assessed based on the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF), and Pollution Load Index (PLI). The spatial distribution of heavy metals in the study area was presented by IDW interpolation technique. This study revealed that the heavy metal concentration (ppm) in sediment are ordered Fe 21.700-65.800 (33,856 ± 11,466) > Mn 81-10.000 (1,615 ± 2,664) > Cr 114,5-241 (162.8 ± 32.63) > Ni 17-173,7 (56.6 ± 41,38) ppm > Pb 13,75-21,2 (17.11 ± 2.11). According to Igeo, CF, and PLI; River sediment surface: moderately contaminated by Fe and Ni; highly contaminated by Mn and Cr metals. Heavy metals Cr and Mn are high contamination factors in sediments. Overall, heavy metal contamination in the Lati River sediment has not caused a progressive decline in sediment quality. Heavy metals that potentially contaminate Lati River Sediment area Fe, Mn, Cr, Ni. The highest accumulation of heavy metals in sediments found in the flow that becomes the drainage effluent of the active mine wastewater treatment system. text
