Summary: | Acid mine drainage (AMD) contaminants are characterized as acidic and contain
high levels of heavy metals so that they have the potential to cause disturbances in
the ecosystem. The biomonitoring method using macrozoobenthos can show the
actual effect of metal levels upon the life of organisms in the ecosystem. Lati River
is a recipient stream of acid mine drainage from PT Berau Coal Energy Tbk. It was
chosen as the research location because it is the main drainage for AMD flow in
the Lati Mine Operation (LMO) work area. Sampling of macrozoobenthos and
sediments was carried out in March and continued with sample analysis in April to
July 2022. Data analysis was in the form of calculation of: 1). Biological indices
including abundance index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, uniformity and
dominance index; 2). CCME WQI water quality index; 3). Pearson-Spearman
correlation analysis and 4). Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results
stated that as many as 15 taxa of the genus macrozoobenthos were found in the Lati
River. The Lati River is classified as polluted, which is in the category of marginal
to poor quality based on the WQI CCME and biotic indices. Environmental
parameters associated with the presence of heavy metals were negatively
correlated with the abundance and diversity of macrozoobenthos. The PCA test that
has been carried out divides sungai Lati’s research station into three different
quadrants. Station 1 is the most identical station with environmental parameters
due to the presence of AMD, while the taxa that are strongly associated with AMD is Chimarra. |
