Summary: | Citrus is a genus of plants that is well known for its antioxidant activity and is widely grown in the tropics.
In this study, mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) and lemon (Citrus limon) peels were used as a source of
bioreductants in the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Mandarin orange and lemon peel extract was
made by maceration. In this synthesis process, several optimizations were carried out such as the ratio of
extract concentration, ratio of extract volume and AgNO3, microwave irradiation time, microwave power
used, pH optimization, and AgNO3 concentration monitored by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Optimum
results were achieved at a concentration of 7.5% extract and 7 mM AgNO3 with a ratio of 4:10 (v/v) at pH
9 with a microwave power of 280 W for 60 seconds for mandarin orange peel extract and extract
concentration of 10% and AgNO3 9 mM with a ratio of 10:10 (v/v) at pH 9 with a microwave power of 280
W for 60 seconds for the lemon peel extract which was characterized by a color change to blackish brown.
The colloidal nanoparticles that have been formed were then characterized by Particle Size Analyzer (PSA),
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope (FTIR), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The
characterization results showed that the silver nanoparticles formed were spheric in shape with an
average size of 59.6 nm and a polydispersity index of 0.425 for mandarin orange peel extract and an
average size of 51.4 nm and a polydispersity index of 0.368 for lemon peel extract. The IC50 values for
testing the antioxidant activity of lemon peel extract, AgNO3 and nanoparticles were 6.022 g/mL, 44.111
g/mL and 15.867 g/mL, respectively. From this research, good optimization results have been obtained
and lemon peel extract can provide additional antioxidant activity against the synthesized silver
nanoparticles.
