TOTAL SUSPENDED SOLID (TSS) REMOVAL FOR COAL MINING WATER USING ELECTROCOAGULATION

The coal mining industry with an open-pit mining system is carried out by stripping the topsoil of the mining material. This method will form elevations and depressions downward which causes accumulated rainwater to enter the mining front and erode the mine walls (soil), this causes the formation of...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/69285 The coal mining industry with an open-pit mining system is carried out by stripping the topsoil of the mining material. This method will form elevations and depressions downward which causes accumulated rainwater to enter the mining front and erode the mine walls (soil), this causes the formation of sludge. Sludge pumping is carried out from mining front to settling pond to prevent damage on equipment and difficulties in mining process. The results of laboratory analysis show that TSS concentration due to this phenomenon can reach 5,400 mg/L. In this study, mining water treatment was conducted using electrocoagulation technique as a form of active treatment. This study was conducted to determine the optimum variation to obtain the highest TSS removal. The variations used are electric current (0.5; 1; and 2 A) and contact time (15; 30; and 45 minutes). Electrocoagulation experiments were carried out using monopolar aluminum electrode pairs with batch operation method. Based on the study, the optimum conditions to achieve highest TSS removal were at 2 A and contact time of 15 minutes. TSS removal was obtained at 99.58% from the initial concentration of 5,400 mg/L to 22.84 mg/L. The results of electrocoagulation process met the quality standard on Total Suspended Solid (TSS) parameter released by the Regional Regulation of the East Kalimantan Province Number 2 of 2011 concerning Water Quality Management and Water Pollution Control. text
