Summary:Indonesia is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. Plants that have therapeutic potential are still being sought. One of the plants that will be explored further is bintaro (Cerbera odollam). This study aimed to determine the characteristics of bintaro and part of the plant that are useful as a source of metabolites. The characterization carried out was macroscopic tests, microscopic tests, and phytochemical screening. Furthermore, simplicia was extracted then analyzed by TLC scanner and sprayed with specific reagent. From macroscopic observation, the appearance of bintaro is different from other simplicia while in microscopic observation can be seen some identification fragments and tissue structure. The leaves, seeds, bark, and latex of bintaro contain quinone and steroid/triterpenoid. Flavonoid can be found in leaves and latex while phenol and tannin are only found in leaves. From the TLC results, alkaloid was detected in bark and latex. Chromatographic analysis showed latex of bintaro can be used as a source of metabolites.
