The skin acts as the first defence for the body from environmental hazards and helps the body to maintain its water content. One way to maintain healthy skin, namely by providing active compounds that can moisturize the skin, for example ?-glucan extract. ?-glucan extract stimulates the proliferation of keratinocytes which act as a physical barrier so that it can prevent skin moisture loss by binding to water. Therefore, there is a decrease in Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and an increase in hydration skin. In this study, characterization and development of ?-glucan extract formulations in moisturizing lotion preparations is conducted. The method used in this study is literature review using Q1-Q3 journals published in 2006-2022 that were obtained through the Science Direct, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar search engines. Based on the data obtained, ?¬glucan extract has stable characteristics under conditions of high temperature, weak acid, neutral, or alkaline. Besides having the ability to moisturize skin, ?-glukan extract also has antioxidant activity. The formulation design of ?-glucan extract lotion based on literature review consisted of 1,5-5% ?-glucan extract; 2% stearic acid; 0,4% TEA; 5% liquid paraffin; 3% cetyl alcohol; 5% glycerine; 0,15-0,4% DMDM hydantoin.
