Description
Summary:Clove oil has excellent antioxidant activity, so it can be used to overcome skin aging caused by the high production of free radicals such as ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) due to environmental exposure such as UV light, cigarette smoke, and pollution. The impact of free radicals on the skin are dull skin, fine lines, and dark spots. However, the use of clove oil directly on the skin causes irritation, and the volatile and oxidizing characteristics of essential oils lead clove oil to need proper formulations. Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLC) is a second-generation nanoparticle lipid that can encapsulate lipophilic substances such as clove oil and has advantages such as having a larger encapsulation capacity than Solid Lipid Nanoparticle (SLN), increasing effects of hydration and occlusion to skin, and can improve stability. In this study, optimization was carried out to obtain the best NLC formula from clove oil. The optimizations carried out in the form of optimizing the selection of liquid lipids, the number of surfactants, and the addition of co-surfactants. The optimum formula obtained in this study is 1,6% clove oil, 2,4% beeswax, 4% VCO, 4% Tween 80, and 1% propylene glycol. The results of the characterization, NLC has a particle size 125,77 ± 24,24 nm, polydispersity index 0,26 ± 0,07, potential zeta -27,3 ± of 4,56 mV, and efficiency encapsulation 97,33 ± 1,29%. The results of the DPPH method antioxidant activity test on vitamin C as a control (IC50 11.74 ± 0.76 ?g/mL), and NLC-clove oil (IC50 18.28 ± 2.15 ?g/mL) the activity is almost the same as pure clove oil (IC50 22.74 ± 0.46 ?g/mL). Stability tests performed on storage at 2-8°C for 14 days showed NLC-clove oil stable.
