In 2021, there are 54 million tons of rice production that generate straw waste in Indonesia. With such a large amount, rice straw has the potential to be used as an alternative source of coal in meeting energy needs in Indonesia. For example, rice straw can be mixed with coal to be burned as a heat source, reducing coal consumption. In order to burn rice straw more efficiently, rice straw needs to be pyrolyzed to remove moisture and volatile matter, so that the char produced has a higher calorific value and properties similar to coal. Therefore, this review will discuss the effect of operating parameters of rice straw pyrolysis on the yield of the product produced. In addition, the co-pyrolysis option of rice straw and coal was also studied to determine the effect of rice straw blending ratio and the conditions when synergistic effect occurs. In this literature study, literature sources were collected with the keywords rice straw, pyrolysis, coal, co-pyrolysis, and synergistic effect. Each literature source was analyzed and conclusions were drawn. The operating parameters analyzed in rice straw pyrolysis are pyrolysis end temperature, residence time, heating rate, and particle size. In the co-pyrolysis process, the type of coal used in the rice straw mixture is bituminous. Synergistic effect in the co-pyrolysis process can occur when there is interaction between particles in both materials during co-pyrolysis. The influence of parameters on the synergistic effect event under review is the effect of temperature and the effect of mixing ratio. The review results show that to obtain optimum char yield (42.8%) in rice straw pyrolysis, the recommended conditions are low final temperature 400°C, short residence time, and slow heating rate 5°C/min. In the rice straw-coal co-pyrolysis process, the addition 20% rice straw will produce maximum char yield of 59%, while the addition 80% rice straw will produce maximum tar and gas yield of 27% and 51%. Synergistic effect was found in tar and gas yields in rice straw-coal copyrolysis under the conditions of rice straw mixing ratio 50-75% and high temperature 900-1000°C. text
