Plants utilization as traditional medicine was implemented centuries ago, yet certain people stay in line to choose traditional medicine. One of the most used is the sweet leaf plant (Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr), especially the leaves, which have many bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, phenols, and tannins. Katuk leaves are believed to be used as an enhancer of milk secretion, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory. Research related to the antidiabetic mellitus effect of sweet leaf leaves ethanol extract, and a fraction has not been found, so this study aims to determine the antidiabetic mellitus activity of sweet leaf leaves ethanol extract and fraction using a diabetic mellitus mice model. Mice divided into 12 groups, i.e positive control (diabetic group), negative control, sweet leaf leaf extract (100 mg/kg; 200 mg/kg; 400 mg/kg), sweet leaf leaf PAD610 fraction (100 mg/kg; 200 mg/kg; 400 mg/kg), and sweet leaf leaf PAD900 fraction (dose 100 mg/kg 200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg). Mice were induced by streptozotocin 40 mg/kg consecutive for five days. Mice that were successfully induced were given samples per oral for 14 consecutive days. Blood glucose levels were measured on day 3, day 7, and day 14 after sample administration. Katuk leaves ethanol extract 400 mg/kg BW, PAD610 fraction 200 mg/kg BW, PAD610 fraction 400 mg/kg BW, PAD900 fraction 200 mg/kg BW, and PAD900 fraction 400 mg/kg BW showed a significant decrease in glucose levels (p <0.05) by 61.00%; 49.47%; 58.38%; 51.93%; and 63.30%, respectively. Thus, the ethanolic extract of sweet leaf leaves and their fractions showed antidiabetic mellitus activity in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The optimum dose of sweet leaf leaves extract was 400 mg/kg BW, while the optimum dose for the PAD610 and PAD900 fractions was 200 mg/kg BW. text |
