Blue light could also exert hyperpigmentation on the skin. Currently, the protective agent to prevent hyperpigmentation i.e. limited chemical and mineral sunscreens which both showed side effects. Natural extracts from plants coud be used as natural solar agents, although the activity value of natural sunscreens is not as high as synthetic sunscreens. Bran oil (rice bran oil) and marigold extract (calendula officinalis extract) used as natural sunscreen agents have been studied. Application of nanotechnology in cosmetics is widely developed, including for sunscreens. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) have the potential used as carriers of sunscreen formulations because the characteristics of SLN itself that could block ultraviolet rays. This study aimed was to formulaye SLN of bran oil and marigold extracts and performed the characterization of the SLN obtained. The SLN preparation was carried out using high-pressure homogeneity and ultrasonication. The results showed that the optimum SLN formulation was obtained in marigold extract (E2) with an SPF value of 24.156 and a blue light protection value of 98.121%. Meanwhile, the SLN formulation of bran oil-marigold extract oil has an SPF value of 16.907 and a blue light protection value of 61.506%, this study showed that mixture of bran oil-marigold extract did not provide synergistic results. Bran oil and marigold extract formulated into SLN produce higher SPF values and blue light protection values than in cream form, but the results of SLN formulations and marigold bran oil creams have a lower SPF value and blue light protection value compared to the results of SLN formulations and marigold extract creams. SLN formula has better spreadability compared to cream formula. It could be concluded that marigold extract has a higher protection value than bran oil and formulations with SLN carriers increased the protection, therefore the marigold extract SLN formula might be consideres as an alternative of the natural sunscreen. text
