The inflammatory process involves the release of various inflammatory mediators that cause a pain response. Ginger rhizome and lemon grass have the potential as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents. This study aims to determine the effect of the combination of ginger and lemongrass extracts on anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity compared to the single extract. The anti-inflammatory activity test was examined by carrageenaninduced paw edema method on male Wistar rats. Rats were injected with 50 ?L ?-Carrageenan 1% intraplantar to induce edema. Furthermore, the percentage of edema and inhibition of edema was calculated. The analgesic activity test was examined by formalin test method on male Swiss Webster mice. Mice were injected with 50 ?L 1% formalin intraplantar to induce pain. The total licking time of mice was calculated at 0-5 minutes (phase I) and 20-30 minutes (phase II) after induction, then the percentage of inhibition was calculated. Based on the percentage of edema parameter in the anti-inflammatory test, the ginger, lemongrass, and 1:1 combination groups differed significantly (p<0.05) from the positive control. The extract combination group gave the percentage of edema inhibition which was not significantly different (p>0.05) against the single extract group at all observation times. The licking time of the single extract group and the combination was significantly different (p<0.05) with the positive control in phase I. In phase II, the licking time of the 1:1 combination was significantly different (p<0.05) from the positive control, with a value of 120, 78 ± 2.40. The 1:1 combination gave a percent inhibition value of 68.57 ± 3.14 and was significantly different (p<0.05) from a single extract in phase I of the analgesic test. In phase II, the combination group was not significantly different (p<0.05) from the single extract. The combination of ginger and lemongrass showed comparable anti-inflammatory activity to a single extract. On analgesic activity, the 1:1 combination showed a significant increase in effect compared to the single extract. text |
