Summary:Avocado oil is an essential oil derived from the fruit of the Persea americana Mill. which has been widely used in the cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry due to the antioxidant properties of its component. To improve its activity, avocado oil is formulated in nanoemulsion dosage form. This study aims to determine the formula and characterize nanoemulsions containing avocado oil. The optimization of avocado oil nanoemulsion formula was carried out using surfactants Kolliphor RH 40 and Kolliphor CS 20, cosurfactants propylene glycol and PEG 400, and water. Avocado oil nanoemulsion was prepared by using ultraturrax and sonication methods. The best avocado oil nanoemulsion formula obtained from this study consisted of Kolliphor RH 40, propylene glycol, avocado oil, and distilled water. The nanoemulsion had white appearance, with globular size was 161,68 ± 6,55 nm; polydispersity index was 0,33 ± 0,04; and pH 7,0. The nanoemulsion formula obtained from this study was physically stable during storage at room temperature and at 40o C for 21 days. Meanwhile, the remaining of avocado oil levels in nanoemulsion after 21 days of storage at room temperature and 40o C were 90,21 ± 1,44 and 72,37 ± 3.54 percent, respectively. Avocado oil and avocado oil in nanoemulsion had IC50 value 23,01 ± 0,83 mg/mL and 5,1 ± 0,03 mg/mL which indicated the absence of antioxidant activity in avocado oil used in this study.
