Summary: | The sheet mask is a beauty product that is currently being used because it helps to hydrate and soothe the skin quickly and easily. The increasing of sheet mask usage leads to an increase of it waste, while some of the sheet masks contain synthetic fibers that are not biodegradable in the environment. Therefore, an innovation is needed in the form of making sheet masks based on natural polymers such as starch and cellulose to overcome these problems. The source of starch used is jicama, while ginger is used as a source of cellulose.
This study used the solution casting method to make sheet masks. Ginger cellulose was isolated using 6% w/v NaOH solution. Cellulose and starch were mixed and the mass ratio of cellulose and starch are 100:0, 100:20, 100:40, 100:60, and 100:80. The tests carried out on sheet masks were tensile testing, serum absorption ability, biodegradation, skin irritation, and surface morphology observations using a stereo microscope.
The addition of starch to cellulose tends to decrease the tensile strength and increase the percent elongation of the sample. The absorption index of the sample to serum decreased with increasing starch composition. Samples with the mass ratio of cellulose and starch are 100:0, 100:20, and 100:40 had better biodegradability than commercial sheet masks. Most of the sheet mask samples produced did not cause negative reactions on the skin, so they were safe to be used on the skin.
