Summary: | Groundwater is vulnerable to contamination due to population increase and ineffective groundwater management. The GIS-based groundwater quality index method was used in this study to identify the level of contamination in the Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin. The parameters used are groundwater quality, geological conditions, hydrogeology, and land use (agriculture, settlements, forests, and industry) which later to be considered the varying degree of its effects on groundwater contamination.
The Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin is composed of two sedimentary rock formations, four volcanic rock formations, and one intrusive rock formation. The analysis was carried out on unconfined groundwater quality data from the Indonesian Geological Agency which was composed of volcanic rocks (in 2010). We analyzed nine parameters: TDS, NO3-, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, Cl-, K+, SO42-, and hardness from 34 wells. A total of 32 samples has quality that met the Permenkes and WHO standards and two sample has TDS value slightly above the standard.
These conditions indicate that geological conditions (rock types, volcanism activity) and human activities (reflected by land use) have not affected groundwater quality. This map can be updated in the future to evaluate land use impacts in groundwater management program. |
