Description
Summary:Fatigue in traindrivers is a substantial issue in the railway industry as it is one of the contributing factors in railway accidents. Fatigue is caused by poor sleeping conditions, one of which is split sleep. Some researches have shown that split sleep causes increase in drowsiness and even worsen mood. This study aims to examine the impact of split sleep in driving railway simulator. Twelve male participants with the age range from (22,6±2,61) 20-25 years old were asked to drive a railway simulator in a laboratorium for 150 minutes. Before the experiment starts, every participants were asked to sleep with two treatments: split sleep for 5 and 3 hours (total sleeping time 7,51±0,37) and consolidated sleep for 8 hours (7,56±0,51). A number of objective test such as Sustained Attention Test (SAT) and subjective tests such as Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were tested before and after the driving simulation. The SAT parameters used in this study were %miss and >850ms. The data in this study showed a trend that split sleep tends to have higher %miss and >850ms than consolidated sleep, although the differences are insignificant. It can be concluded that split sleep is not recommended to be done by traindrivers as there is an indication of fatigue. Nonetheless, if splitting sleep is necessary, the railway company need to make sure that the traindrivers get enough and good quality sleep. Companies also need to ensure that the traindrivers are awake at least 15 minutes before their working hour starts.
