Description
Summary:The concept of sustainability within fashion and textile industry has reintroduced to the trend of natural dyes, it also aim to raise the awareness of the industry to reduce its environmental issues by finding more eco-friendly dye alternatives, which essentially are effective, efficient, non-carcinogenic, and pose no health nor environmental harm. Based on the result of earlier researches, microalgae is one of the potent pigment-producers to be utilized as textile natural dye alternatives. This research studied two types of microalgae, Spirulina platensis and Haematococcus pluvialis; with guar gum and alginate as thickening agents, shibori technique is used to apply the desired patterns onto the textile medium (which is natural fiber). Some advantages of processing natural dye from microalgae-based pigments are: lower production costs, easier harvesting and extraction process, its cultivation potential ensures the steady supply of resource, shorter harvesting time compared to other plant-based pigments. Spirulina produces a green-blue pigment (phycocyanin), while Haematococcus produces orange-red pigment (astaxanthin). Color fastness test was conducted at Lab Balai Besar Tekstil, to determine the two algae's potency and characteristics. With its great potential, it is hoped that these microalgae could be a more sustainable natural dye alternatives.
