POLYMER TYPE ANALYSIS OF MICROPLASTICIN MUARA ANGKE AND SOUTH OF PARI ISLAND

Microplastic is plastic whose size is less than 5 mm and more than 0.3 mm. Microplastics are made from two things, from plastics that are deliberately produced in micro sizes and from the degradation of large plastics. This undergraduate thesis aims to the identification of microplastics polymer in...

Microplastics are made from two things, from plastics that are deliberately produced in micro sizes and from the degradation of large plastics. This undergraduate thesis aims to the identification of microplastics polymer in the ocean surface layer at Jakarta Bay. Samples were taken from 2 areas, first in south of Pari Island on 1 November 2019 and second in Muara Angke on 4 November 2019 using a manta net. The samples were analyzed by using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectrum to determine material samples categorized as plastic or non-plastic and distinguish the types of polymers plastic that most pollute the marine environment. The results showed that the samples in Muara Angke had a total of 174 particles consisting of 4 different types of polymers, namely PE (Polyethylene) of 56.896%, PP (Polypropylene) of 10.344%, cellulose of 20.114%, and PCR (Polychloroprene) of 12.643%, with abundance per area, abundance per volume, minimum average density, and maximum average density of microplastics in Muara Angke respectively were 0.465 particles/m2, 3,102 particles/m3, 923 kg/m3, and 969 kg/m3. While the samples in the south of Pari Island had a total of 333 particles consisting of 6 different types of polymers, namely PE by 41.141%, PP by 1.501%, PS (Polystyrene) by 0.3%, cellulose by 56.456%, PCR by 0.3%, and PCL (Polycaprolactone) of 0.3%, with abundance per area, abundance per volume, minimum average density, and maximum average density of microplastics in the south of Pari Island respectively were 0.569 particles/m2, 3,792 particles/m3, 929 kg/m3, and 978 kg/m3 text
