Summary:ABSTRACT: <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The content of this thesis concerns the existence of batik in a series of traditional rituals in the Paseseh community of Madura. The questions which are the main focus of this thesis are: In what way and to what extent does the culture of the Paseseh community influence the form of batik ornaments, and what is its meaning? What elements appear in the form of batik motifs used in the series of traditional rituals in the Paseseh community? Why are these elements in the form of batik motifs made use of as a symbolic medium? And what is the depth of the meaning of these batik motifs for the traditional Paseseh community? <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> This thesis attempts to identify, comprehend, and explain: firstly, the position of batik as a point of orientation, system of symbols, and adaptive means used by the Paseseh community; secondly, the characteristics of the form of ornaments of Paseseh batik as a system of symbols of Paseseh community; thirdly, the meaning of batik ornaments as a system of meaning which reflects the result of of the communitys interaction with its environment. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Bearing in mind that culture is an element which influences the existence of Paseseh batik, an overall understanding of the form, role, and meaning of batik is based on a cultural approach, that is a way of looking at culture as a system. Within this framework, culture is construed as a concept which is used for analysis and at the same time as a model for study. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The problems posed in the research for this thesis placed more emphasis on discovering the process and meaning, and for this reason, the paradigm of approach and strategy of research used was qualitative descriptive research. A phenomenological perspective with ethnographical dimensions was used. As such, this research is of an emic nature, as it is based on a means of emphatic understanding or verstehen within the framework of indigenous knowledge which is expressed in the form of thick description. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Based on the research, it could be concluded that the culture of the Paseseh community has a strong influence on the existence of its batik, both on its form of ornaments, and also on its symbolic meaning. The elements which appear in the ornaments of traditional Paseseh batik are flora, fauna, and other objects closely associated with daily life. These elements in the form of ornaments are used as symbols because they reflect mythological ideas concerning the equilibrium of the cosmos based on primordial mythical cosmology. it was discovered that the meaning of batik ornaments has a role to play in the Paseseh community. This can be seen from the use of batik in the series of rituals for the life cycle (births, marriages, and deaths), and rituals associated with the main sources of lifehood for the Paseseh community (rokat tase , gabey parao, and toron parao).
