Description
Summary:Palembang a city with a river-oriented cultural roots. However, over time the orientation of urban activities changed to the mainland, making the river as the backyard of the city. To reconnect the urban community and river, one of the strategy is the development of riverfront tourism facilities. One area that has not been developed and located in the riverside tourism fabric of Palembang City is Sekanak. Sekanak has several historical heritage buildings from the 1900s which marked the entry of colonial culture and the change of river-oriented city to land-oriented city. However, the hustle and bustle of the Sekanak area is now receding. That resulted in several abandoned buildings, because it was no longer functioned by the owners. The activities, physical structure and concept of Sekanak are currently unable to accommodate the needs of Palembang riverside tourism. So the reconstruction of a place is needed to reconnect the riverside area to the people of Palembang City. However, the development needs to maintain the continuity of the place identity to avoid the negative effects of gentrification. Given these issues, the author chose a placemaking approach that aims to connect humans and their spaces. The development will give new meaning to the place as a riverside tourism facility. Based on the literature study of placemaking, it was concluded that design interventions must be able to integrate place identity and openness to new developments to maintain continuity of place identity. On architectural scale, contextual design principles are applied by integrating adaptive reused old building and new designed building on the site. To identify the place identity and the existing conditions of the site, a site analysis was carried out according to the placemaking aspects including activity, sociability, imagery and comfort and accessibility. The conclusion of the literature study and site analysis resulted in the design criteria being synthesized into a design. The design includes site development, facility programs and architectural designs resulting in site, facility program, buildings and outdoor spaces design.
