Description
Summary:Nuclear power plays an important role in addressing climate change and in enabling energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable powers. The development of nuclear reactor has come up to the utilization of molten salts, either as coolant and even as part of reactor fuel mixture. The purpose of this research is to study the salt chemical and the melting behavior of a relevant Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) fuel system, which is LiF-NaF-KF-UF4 system through thermodynamic simulation. This study began with the construction of LiF-NaF-KF-UF4 system thermodynamic database. Literature study was carried out to collect thermodynamic data obtained from previous experiments. Thermodynamic parameters for pure compounds and molten salt solutions from previous assessments were used as a starting point. These parameters were further improved by performing error minimization to obtain a better model that acceptably fit all previous experimental data. The obtained model generates calculated thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams that are acceptably within the distribution of available experimental data. Through thermodynamic simulation using the constructed thermodynamic database, a suitable composition of salt mixture as a MSR fuel candidate has been identified in this study.
