Description
Summary:The need for textiles increase by 70% along with the increase of human population, researchers looking for opportunities in the development of alternative materials in the form of bacterial cellulose fibers such as SCOBY Kombucha. SCOBY or Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast is a combined symbiotic composition of the fermentation process of microbes and yeast commonly used as an ingredient in the production of beverages such as kombucha. The ability of SCOBY Kombucha to produce cellulose sheets opens up opportunities to become textiles that are applied to wear products. This research aims to treat SCOBY with some additional materials such as sodium alginate to produce larger SCOBY fields and more stable materials. Sodium alginate is expected to provide better strength and fiber characteristics of SCOBY compared to SCOBY obtained with the aim of producing alternative textile materials from SCOBY that can be applied as disposable textile products. The SCOBY and sodium alginate experiments produced textile materials that conformed to textile standards (sufficient length, good smoothness, moderate tensile strength, and foldability). This research was conducted with a qualitative approach with experimental methods, data comparison analysis, and exploration described descriptively and using a material research scheme. The results of this research are in the form of processed SCOBY materials and product applications in the form of fashion accessories in the form of cardholders, wallets, clutches/handbags by applying weaving and interlock techniques as a process of designing SCOBY material products.
