Summary:PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk is renowned as the national flag carrier for Indonesia and is one of the leading companies in this country’s airline industry. The company had served more than 70 years in the airline industry, and it makes Garuda Indonesia have a special place in the heart of most Indonesian citizens. During its operations, the company has successfully recorded several international recognitions. As we all know the year 2020 began with the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus which starting in Wuhan, China, and spread through all the corners of the world including Indonesia. The virus was transmitted easily through droplets between humans. The spread of the virus directly impacted the country’s economy. And not long after it started, there was travel restrictions that cause the transportation and tourism industry to shake, Garuda Indonesia was significantly affected. As a result, Garuda Indonesia reduced its production capacity and caused significant losses. Another domino effect that was caused by the virus was that the company’s performance has declined significantly, affecting its ability to run its business. Two years of facing Covid-19 Pandemic had made Garuda Indonesia decide on some strategic initiative, one is proposing early retirement for employees, but it makes it more difficult to maintain the performance with a limited number of employees. In the end Garuda Indonesia must enter the PKPU process to restore the company’s position. And in June 2022 Garuda Indonesia succeeded in going through it and planned to return to perform with the post pandemic strategy. The aspect of operational safety is the most important thing for an airline company so that an approach that prioritizes more proactive aspects becomes the main basis when pilots work and can automatically reduce occurrences or incidents because pilots always prioritize professionalism in work and prioritize standard work procedures. The emphasis on the level of safety that is acceptable to the Company is a benchmark for pilots at work. It is a common hope that the incident rate can be reduced to zero with the support of the availability of reliable production equipment, competent human resources according to the practical standards of the aviation industry. The Unit Corporate Safety, Quality & Environment Management is the unit that is responsible for supporting how safety is managed according to regulation. This unit is also responsible for making programs in maintaining safety as part of the soul of the airline industry using Safety Management System approach. And currently, human resources became one of the concerns to make the company run its process normally as before. Having lack of experience and expertise, challenges the company in maintaining its safety performance, especially controlling the incident rate in acceptable conditions. Exploring new innovation will facing challenge with company’s current condition. In this paper the researcher wants to see whether in this challenging time the pilots to have a new or different point of view about how safety still becomes the priority for day-to-day operation, despite the reduced or lack of available resources. The implementation proposal put forward is through a short-term approach by establishing a work program that correlates with knowledge management and is listed in the 2023 work program which is approved by the company's Directors. And preparing for long-term implementation by adjusting to the needs of the aviation industry which continues to be dynamic both in terms of regulation and technology. Pilots are expected to be able to keep abreast of developments and industry dynamics by having a good mindset to support the existence of the Company. Become important to maintain safety performance in flight operation unit as pilots give main output in the safe operation of the airplane. The result of this final project is to conclude how knowledge management can help the company's safety performance to be well maintained, especially in controlling safety incidents, one of which is the operational incident rate, reducing the possibility of an operational incident occurring as low as possible, strengthening the corporate culture and providing other alternatives that are more effective, received by pilots and ultimately lead to comfort at work and provide full support for the recovery of the Company's performance which in turn puts Garuda Indonesia to continue to exist in the aviation industry in Indonesia according to its vision and mission.
