STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF ADDITIONAL WATER VARIATION ON THE POTENTIAL OF SPONTANEOUS COAL COMBUSTION WITH ADIABATIC HEATING METHOD R70 LABORATORY SCALE ON 0.1 L/MIN OXYGEN CONCENTRATION

Spontaneous coal combustion is a serious problem for coal mining activities because it can be a source of fire, including in stockpile area. Hartman, (1998) states that spontaneous coal combustion is the result of coal oxidation under conditions that allow the heat of oxidation to be partially retained in the coal until the self-ignition temperature is reached. Guney, (1968) states the factors that causing spontaneous coal combustion can be intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors can be in the gorm of pyrite, moisture content and water content, particle size, and others. While extrinsic factors can be temperature, weather, pressure, oxygen concentration, and others. This study focuses on the effect of water content (intrinsic factor) and oxygen concentration (extrinsic factor) on the potential of spontaneous coal combustion. The variations in addition of water content that used in this study were 0%, 5%, and 15% with 0.1 L/min oxygen concentration, which will be compared with the study of Sihombing, 2022 which conducted the same study with 0.05 L/min oxygen concentration. The grain size of the coal used in this study was -270+325# (0.044 – 0.053 mm) as much as 200 grams. From this study, the average of R70 value for dry coal, 5% water addition, and 15% water addition conditions is 6.85 oC/h, 3.76 oC/h, and 2.37 oC/h. The average value of activation energy for dry coal, 5% water addition, and 15% water addition conditions is 17.59 kJ/gram, 30.12 kJ/gram, and 33.37 kg/gram. So, that it can be concluded that the greater the water addition in the coal sample, the smaller the value of R70 (oC/h) and the greater activation energy (kJ/gram). When compared with the study of Sihombing,2022, it was found the R70 in this study was smaller. In this study, test were also carried out on samples of coal in the original condition, without doing any drying process first. It was found that the R70 value was not found because the temperatur continued to decrease while the test is running. text
