Description
Summary:Abstract:

A very bitter white needle crystalline alkaloid has been isolated from the chloroform extract of the fresh stems of Tinospora crispa (L) Miers ex Hook. F. & Thems. It melted at 124 - 125C.

The ultraviolet, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonan ce, and mass spectra showed the alkaloid contained an even number of nitrogen atom, aromatic nuclei, -OH phenolic or -NH bounded, Ca,C or C-N, -OCH31 C=0 groups and its molecular weight was 374.

From the data obtained it can be deduced that the compound is not berberine or palmatine and neither artefacts resulting from berberine nor palmatine with chloroform.
