Description
Summary:The coal resources in East Kalimantan have a potential that can provide benefits through regional economic development. Most of Indonesia's coal production in East Kalimantan makes the coal sector as a largest revenue contributor to in the region economy. Dependence on the coal sector initially provides a large income, but when global coal prices or other conditions caused the coal demand decrease, s0 the regional economic less growth or negative. The dependence on the abundant of coal in East Kalimantan is a phenomena of resource curse that make economic growth was depleted. The previous research has explained about a negative relationship between natural resources and economic growth. While, this study using panel data from 6 region in East Kalimantan from the 2011 to 2021. Furthermore, this study obtained the Common Effect Model as the best model for panel data regression, which look the coal sector and other main sectors on the economic growth. Based on the analysis, the coal sector has a negative effect on economic growth, this indicates that East Kalimantan has the economic potential of a resource curse. These results are supported by panel data regression, where economic growth has decreased by 0.2311”6, for every 146 increase in the coal sector. However, the manufacturing sector, as the second contributor to regional income after the coal sector, has contributed 2046 to the total PDRB in 2021, which has a positive influence. Therefore, East Kalimantan can reduce the impact of the resource curse by developing the manufacturing sector.
