This research is about a literature study on the synthesis of silica spheres based on the Stöber method which produces hollow and mesoporous silica spheres. Stöber et al. first synthesized microsphere silica by hydrolyzing Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor with a mixture of ammonia, alcohol and water. Many researchers modified the synthesis method by adding surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or polymers such as triblock copolymers, which resulted in new forms of hollow microsphere silica and mesoporous microsphere silica in various types and sizes. description |
Modification of the synthesis technique of silica microspheres has been carried out
in order to obtain specific sizes and shapes of silica spheres according to the
required function. This research is about a literature study on the synthesis of silica
spheres based on the Stöber method which produces hollow and mesoporous silica
spheres. Stöber et al. first synthesized microsphere silica by hydrolyzing
Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor with a mixture of ammonia, alcohol
and water. Many researchers modified the synthesis method by adding surfactants
such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or polymers such as triblock
copolymers, which resulted in new forms of hollow microsphere silica and
mesoporous microsphere silica in various types and sizes. The data analyzed were
taken (citations) from 60 journals related to silica microspheres from 1990-2012,
with some supporting additional literature. Furthermore, analyzing data from
journals that have been obtained regarding what factors can affect the size and shape
of hollow microsphere silica and mesoporous microsphere silica. The synthesis of
microsphere silica using Stöber's method can be modified by means of chemical
treatment in the form of addition of surfactants and addition of polymers.
Modification of synthesis by chemical treatment affects the shape of silica
microspheres which are useful for metal binding agents and special pharmaceutical
ingredients. Another synthesis modification with physical treatment in the form of
the influence of pH, synthesis time and temperature so that it can be synthesized
silica microspheres with a specific size and shape. The results obtained are the
proposed sol-gel technique for the synthesis of hollow microsphere silica and a
modification of the Stöber method with the addition of cationic surfactants. CTAB
surfactant is better than other types of surfactants because it has a more stable and
homogeneous microsphere silica. Polystyrene polymers or triblock copolymers can
also be used as templates. The pH used in the synthesis, the higher the pH, the larger
the size of the silica will be. The diameter of silica microspheres tends to decrease
with increasing synthesis time. The increase in temperature will increase the
diameter of the silica microspheres.
