ALPHA DECAY HALF-LIVES CALCULATION OF NUCLEI 62 ? Z ? 100 USING WOODS-SAXON POTENTIAL

Alpha decay is one of the earliest known decay modes. The study of alpha decay has been a useful tool to probe the nuclear structure by providing information about ground state energy, half-lives, nuclear deformation, etc. Furthermore, a better prediction of alpha decay half-lives is continously...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/70452 Alpha decay is one of the earliest known decay modes. The study of alpha decay has been a useful tool to probe the nuclear structure by providing information about ground state energy, half-lives, nuclear deformation, etc. Furthermore, a better prediction of alpha decay half-lives is continously needed for the synthesis of new elements and isotopes. The alpha decay process has been explained by Gamow and by Gurney and Condon as a phenomenon of quantum tunneling where the alpha particle strikes against the potential barrier with a finite probability of penetration. This probability depends on the potential barrier which is a sum of the Coulomb potential, the centrifugal potential, and the nuclear potential. The nuclear potential remains an open problem to this day. In this work, a Woods-Saxon potential is used for the nuclear potential. This work aims to calculate the alpha decay half-lives of even-even nuclei of Z=62 to 100 within the Unified Fission Model based on a Woods-Saxon potential. The calculation is done numerically using a Matlab program. The calculated values are compared to experimental values and it is found that they follow the same pattern and are almost the same. text
