Description
Summary:Anthracene is one of organic pollutant compounds (POPs) and PAH’s group originating from pyrolytic or petrogenic activities in the environment. Anthracene compound harm organisms because they are carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic so they are dangerous and difficult to decompose by aquatic microorganisms. Therefore, a method is needed to remove PAH compounds in water areas. The adsorption method is the most efficient because it has high selectivity, is economical, and works simply. MCM-41 is an example of an adsorbent that can be used in the PAH adsorption process because it has a high surface area, regular structure, uniform cavity, and high thermal stability. Based on several previous studies, it was found that the modified MCM-41 had an increased adsorption capacity of PAHs. The purpose of this study was to modify MCM-41 using N-[3(trimethoxyl)propylethylenediamine] (EDAPTMS) and to characterize it using Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and contact angle test. EDAPTMS has an alkyl group that can bind to silanol groups on the surface of MCM-41 so that the hydrophobicity of MCM-41 will increase and be able to bind PAHs. The adsorption test through adsorption isotherm studies showed that the adsorption of anthracene followed the Freundlich isotherm model and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Based on the thermodynamic analysis, it was found that the adsorption reaction of anthracene with MCM-41 modified EDAPTMS was an endothermic reaction with positive and spontaneous entropy values at 30 oC and 35 oC
