Summary:Background: Olympics is one of the prestigious sport events which is the main target for elite athletes. In Indonesia, weightlifting is one of the sports that consistently contributes medals at theOlympics. Opinion in circulation states that most weight lifters come from low socioeconomic class families. The purpose of this study was to determine the socioeconomic and anthropometry profile of weightlifters, and determine the motivation of athletes to choose sports. Methods: This research is an observationalstudy that uses data collection methods by survey where researchers distribute questionnaires, conduct interviews, and also make observations. Results: the result shown that in general, parent’s education of lifters are on the high school, and the income is generally <Rp. 3,000,000 per month with labor and self-employed jobs. Most athletes choose weightlifting due to environmental factors and economic needs. Anthropometric characteristics of lifter show that women's body mass index is higher than the men, and there are shorter arm length and leg length in young athletes. The average age of international level athletes was 25 years old with the last education status being high school. This is because there are many concerns that athletes will decrease their performance if they continue the further education. Conclusion: The socioeconomic background of weight lifters is in the lower middle class, and this influences someone to choose a sport. While the anthropometric characteristics of weight lifters are included in the mesomorph and endomorph body groups.
