Summary: | The background of this thesis is phenomenon of income inequality and regional
inequality in special region of Yogyakarta. Tourism is a sector which developed by
regions that is located far away from urban region to increase their competitiveness,
employ local workforce, and increase local welfare. Rural region is in an advantage
because tourism potency mostly located far away from urban region.
Most of Indonesian rural community still depends on low productivity agriculture,
while rural community who work outside agricultural sector is having higher
opportunity to get out of poverty. Community based tourism (CBT) often
interpreted as tourism that is managed by local community with its main objective
is to increase their welfare. CBT’s main tourist attractions are cultural, social and
environmental aspects. The strength of CBT is its community empowerment, as
well as educating tourists and low impact towards environment.
Rural transformation interpreted as a comprehensive process where rural
community enlarge their livelihood and reduce their dependency towards
agricultural sector, and becoming more dependent to other regions for exchanging
goods, service and ideas. The chance for having livelihood outside of agricultural
sector is making farmers tend to switch or diversify their livelihood. Rural
transformation was inevitable mainly because of majority of people who work
outside agricultural sector having more income.
This research uses qualitative method and case study, where the case study is
Nglinggo Tritis tourist destination in Kulon Progo Regency, special region of
Yogyakarta. This region is selected because it has undergo impact of tourism for
around 10 years, and tourism activity is already becoming part of the community
livelihood. In this research, author illustrated the relationship patterns of CBT and
rural transformation in Nglinggo Tritis using a model where in this model,
development of CBT is positively impacting rural transformation in the region.
Result of this thesis could be a trigger for discussion toward rural development with
tourism as its main sector, because there were no research that directly address
relationship patterns of tourism and rural transformation before. |
