YOGYAKARTA EARTHQUAKE OF MAY 27, 2006 AND OPAK FAULT PALEOSEISMOLOGY

Damaging and undamaging earthquake oftenly felt in Java island. Felt earthquake in the island were sourced from the subduction zone south of Java and active fault located inland. The magnitude M=6.3 Yogyakarta Earthquake of May 27, 2006 was an inland epicenter located in the Bantul region, causin...

Felt earthquake in the island were sourced from the subduction zone south of Java and active fault located inland. The magnitude M=6.3 Yogyakarta Earthquake of May 27, 2006 was an inland epicenter located in the Bantul region, causing intensively damaged in Yogyakarta Province and a part of Central Java Province, the Klaten District. The objectives of this research are recognizing active fault responsible to the earthquake event of May 27, 2006, and also to study this fault activity by paleoseismology study. Field survey found that maximum intensity felt around Bantul District registered on VIII MMI Scale. The building damaged are mostly due to non engineered building, short distance to epicenter and lithology that unstable to earthquake shaking. Other effects of earthquake shaking were found as landslide, ground fracturing and liquefaction. The results of aftershock monitoring and GPS measurement showing a fault pattern paralel to the Opak River. Data analysis shown that Opak Fault was possibly an active fault that responsible to this earthquake event. Study on paleoseismology of the Opak fault, shown that this fault was active for at least 2300 to 2900 years ago. text
