Description
Summary:The development of the Angso Duo trade and service strategic area bordering the Batanghari River in the 2010 Building and Environmental Planning (RTBL) of the Jambi City Market Area is directed using the concept of waterfront city development. The existence of the Gentala Arasy Pedestrian Bridge further enchances the identity of Jambi City as a waterfront city, but the condition around the area of the new icon of Jambi City, especially the Angso Duo area, has not shown the implementation of the waterfront city concept in the development of the area where the positive attributes of the existence of water elements have not been optimally utilized. The formation of the image of Jambi City which is directed as a waterfront city also needs to be adjusted to the perspectives of the community on the identity of Jambi City and Angso Duo Area based on the potential, social and historical meaning they feel and know. The Angso Duo area will also be identified the physical elements of its city's image using the Gestalt Visual Organization criteria. This type of research is descriptive from the survey results on the description of the image of Jambi City and the Angso Duo area based on the views of the community after the construction of the Gentala Arasy Pedestrian Bridge is planned to support the concept of the city as a waterfront city. Descriptive analysis was also carried out from the results of field observations of the five elements of city image in the Angso Duo area as the scope of the study area which will be assessed for its image as a waterfront area. In addition, statistical descriptive analysis was also carried out on the results of field interviews regarding community perceptions of community expectations for activities and facilities that must be presented to develop the area as a waterfront city. These matters becomes the basis for formulating strategies to improve the image of Jambi City as a waterfront city. In the end, the community chose and liked the identity of Jambi City as a Waterfront City because they felt Jambi City had the geographical potential of the Batanghari River which had to be utilized, the history which had to be preserved, and social significance with various activities on the banks of the river which had to be accommodated. To strengthen the city's image as a waterfront city, image strengthening needs to be done in the Angso Duo area as a 'chosen land' in the civilization legend of Jambi City. This area has the potential to become a metropolisv area with mixed-used functions that can combine recreational functions and the main function, namely the economic function and administration of city services. The five physical elements of the city's image in the area are not fully able to give a good visual impression as a waterfront area with the main function of trade and services. In the path element, vegetation has not shown any continuity, the presence of road furniture has not provided a clear visual impression and the pedestrian paths are not connected to the river banks. Likewise, with the other four elements in the area, it is necessary to improve so that the visual impression is easier for visitors to the area to capture. In addition to looking at city identity based on nonphysical and physical elements, community expectations for the activities and facilities presented in a waterfront area and making comparisons with other waterfront areas is one of the inputs in formulating a strategy to improve Jambi's image as a waterfront city.
