Summary:Centrifugal pump represent equipment which is used in many industries. Volute casing is one of the centrifugal pump components which made by metal casting process. In metal casting process, pattern is an important part in forming mould cavity and pattern is used to form a sand mould cavity. Melted iron is pour to sand mould cavity so to obtained casting form according to pattern form. The form of volute casing pattern can be classified to high difficulty level because of its unique house of snail like form, which need a precision process and high skill operator. The problems which often arise are inappropriate thickness of casting wall, which is usually caused by pattern making problem.<p>This final project was conducted to improve the volute casing pattern making process, so it produced a good casting quality dimension. Refinement in processing volute casing pattern had been made by changing the process, from a parallel process (that is commonly used) become a series process. At parallel process, pattern making and core box is done at the same time. At series process, core box is made beforehand using an initial core as form reference, hereinafter initial core is applied as construction basis to make pattern. Refinement of process of volute casing pattern covers: designing of volute casing pattern, pattern making process planning, core box and pattern making then making a trial of casting by using the pattern and core box which has been yielded. Wall thickness measuring test that applied had been making an improvement in series process that the wall thickness shows uniform. By this means, it can be conclude that volute casing pattern which is applies a series process method can yield a better quality of casting dimension.
