CHARACTERIZATION OF EMISSIONS FROM CO-FIRING OF COAL WITH REFUSE-DERIVED FUEL AND RICE HUSK
Coal is a fossil fuel commonly used as a source of energy in various sectors. Coal consumption needs to be reduced because it emits large amounts of greenhouse gasses (GHG). Co-firing coal with alternative fuels such as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and rice husks is expected to reduce coal consumpti...

Emissions from cofiring coal with alternative fuels need to be studied to evaluate and control environmental impacts. This research objective is to determine the effect of cofiring on its emission characteristics. The fuel samples used consisted of coal, mixtures of coal and RDF, and mixtures of coal and rice husk with alternative fuel compositions of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% by mass. The parameters measured consist of the composition of black carbon in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the concentration of CO2, CO, NOx, and SO2 gasses. Based on the result of the study, the measurement of black carbon by optical methods is not accurate in emissions with high concentration of particulates. Co-firing with RDF reduces NOx and SO2 emissions. Co-firing with rice husk reduces SO2 emissions.
