INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/70961 Train accidents has been an issue that needs to be studied. One of the causes of train accidents is driver fatigue, which might be caused by split sleep. Split sleep is commonly applied due to train drivers’ social needs, religious activities, family needs, and commuting. This study aims to evaluate the effect of split sleep and driving duration on fatigue based on the use of a train simulator. A total of 12 male participants were asked to drive a train simulator for 2.5 hours after facing two sleep conditions, split sleep and baseline. The split sleep requires participants to sleep in two segments at 05.00-10.00 and 12.00-15.00, while the baseline is carried out in one segment at 21.00-05.00. Fatigue is measured based on changes in brain wave signals through the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory (SOFI). Fatigue measurement with EEG was carried out in the first and last 10 minutes of the simulation, while fatigue measurement with SOFI was carried out before and after the simulation. Based on this study, there are significant differences in SOFI’s lack of energy and physical discomfort before simulation in both sleep conditions. This indicates subjective fatigue in split sleep compared to baseline. However, the EEG data and other SOFI dimensions did not show any difference between the two sleep states. Another result of this study is the presence of significant differences after conducting simulations in all SOFI dimensions. This shows that running the simulation for 2.5 hours increases subjective fatigue. In conclusion, split sleep should not be used by train drives because it can increase subjective fatigue. However, if split sleep needs to be implemented, it is necessary to fulfill sleep quantity (7-9 hours) and improve sleep quality. In addition, there are also needs to ensure that the drivers are awake at least 15 minutes before work schedule starts. text
