INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/70980 Digital animation has played a major role in internalizing gender concept to children. Unfortunately, many of them contains stereotypical gender concepts. Whereas animation can be used as an effective gender equality social agent if it is designed with gender issues in mind. This research and design were carried out to find out the effect of gender stereotypes on children's development and to design digital animation to introduce gender equality concept to children aged 6-7 years. The main theories used in the literature review of this research are gender concept theory, gender-neutral design, and digital animation. Embedded mixed methods are used in this research and design. The research phase consisted of a literature review, interviews with gender studies experts, child psychologists, animation industry practitioners, as well as interviews, questionnaire surveys and FGDs with the target audience. The design stage includes pre-production, production, and post-production. The one-group pretest-posttest design was used to see the effect of the design results on the children’s gender views. The novelty of this research and design is first, the output of the research is the gender-responsive digital animation entitled Putri Putra episode "Who Can Catch the Fish!" as a solution to children’s gender stereotype views. Second, the character designs represent feminine and masculine gender, androgynous, and gender neutral. Third, the novelty of the demographic aspects of research subjects and target audiences where previous research was only conducted in countries outside Indonesia. The results of the posttest showed a significant change in children's gender view after watching the Putri Putra animation. The child's gender view on the fishing activity variable has changed from being stereotypical to being gender responsive. Therefore, this thesis can contribute as an equal gender concept socialization agent and become a source of reference for parents and practitioners in the field of animation and children's education. text
