SHORELINE CHANGES ANALYSIS OF CIREBON COASTAL AREA IN 1991-2021 BASED ON AN INTEGRATION OF SATELLITE IMAGERY AND SEDIMENT STUDY

Some of the threats in the Cirebon coastal area are coastal erosion and sedimentation which make this area one of the government’s priorities. Coastal erosion and sedimentation can be observed through changes in the shoreline. The understanding of shoreline changes and sediment movement in this area...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/71224 Some of the threats in the Cirebon coastal area are coastal erosion and sedimentation which make this area one of the government’s priorities. Coastal erosion and sedimentation can be observed through changes in the shoreline. The understanding of shoreline changes and sediment movement in this area can be used as information for future coastal management. Shoreline changes in every sub-district of Cirebon coastal area are examined for 30 years (1991-2021) using satellite imageries and the sediment movement is examined based on the coastal cell areas. The shorelines are extracted with Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) method based on Landsat 5, 7, and 8 imageries. Shoreline rate changes are calculated using Linear Regression Rate (LRR) from Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). Alongshore sediment transport directions are determined based on Ashton et al. (2003) equation. The Cirebon coastal area is divided into sediment cells with transient boundary and fixed partial boundary. Cirebon coastal area tends to experience sedimentation in every sub-district. Longshore sediment transport directions in 30 years from Kapetakan to Pangenan Sub-district tend to move to the south then to the east. Meanwhile from Pangenan to Losari Sub-district, longshore sediment transport directions tend to move to the west and east. Based on the sediment cells with transient boundary, the morphology pattern in the first sediment cell matches with the longshore sediment transport direction pattern. However, the second cell does not show similarity of pattern with the longshore sediment transport directions, this can be caused by the dominance of river activities of Bangkaderes river and Cisanggarung river in the second sediment cell. Based on the sediment cells with fixed partial boundary, there are 3 sediment cells that match with the calculation of longshore sediment transport direction within 30 years, 1 sediment cell that is influenced by the local residential, 1 sediment cell that tends to be influenced by river activity, 3 sediment cells that tend to be stable, and 1 sediment cell that shows a pattern of longshore sediment transport to the west. text
