The development of bridge seismic design in Indonesia which is based on SNI
2833:2016 currently still uses the LRFD method, which uses seismic design
categories and operational categories to determine design parameters used in the
analysis. This method lacks a relationship between engineering design parameters
and performance level targets. Currently, National Cooperative Highway Research
Program (NCHRP) proposes a performance-based seismic design method as future
guidelines for bridge seismic design by determining engineering design parameters
that are directly linked to damage limit states to identify the performance level of a
bridge. This method is beneficial for the bridge owner and designer to anticipate
the chosen performance level target that the bridge could resist as a design
earthquake happen. Performance level targets are divided into 3 categories, the
highest to the lowest: fully operational, operational, and life safety. This PBSD
method has been developing towards the actual damage states on the bridge that
invented engineering design parameters that can be linked to performance level by
evaluating the strain limit states on bridge earthquake resisting elements first
yielding.
The application of a performance-based seismic design on a continuous reinforced
concrete bridge named Palu IV bridge with a total length of main span (rigid frame)
is 116 meters and two other side spans are 66,7 meters. This research will be
evaluating the application of a performance-based seismic design on the selected
bridge based on design parameters on the bridge pier (strain limits, drift and
rotations limit) according to NCHRP 440, 949 and ASCE 41-17 document using
Midas Civil 2022. This analysis would use nonlinear time history analysis with 7
couples of upper and lower-level ground motion acceleration to capture the design
parameters based on the bridge performance level target. The result of this study
shows that Palu IV bridge is in full operational performance level both for lowerlevel
ground motion (100 years return period) and upper-level ground motion
(1000 years return period).
