Description
Summary:Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure in ambient air comes from tobacco, smoke, and vehicle exhaust emissions. Anthracene (ANT) is a type of Low Molecular Weight (LMW) PAH that is included in the EPA's priority pollutant list, it is ubiquitous in the atmosphere and aqueous media. Despite its very low solubility in water (0,04 mg/L), it remains a highly toxic micropollutant. One method that can be used to detect PAH is the fluorescent-based method. Based on preliminary studies that have been conducted, there is an interaction between PAH (naphthalene, anthracene, and phenanthrene) and oxy aryl-substituted BODIPY derivatives that produce an increase in fluorescent. Phenolic BODIPY is a derivative form of BODIPY with a phenol group at the meso position. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize BODIPY phenolic compounds (vanillin-BODIPY and p-hydroxy BODIPY), study the interaction of anthracene with UV-Vis and fluorescent spectroscopy methods, as well as the manufacture of e -module chemical experiment regarding fluorescent material. Vanillin-BODIPY and p-hydroxy BODIPY have been successfully synthesized with very high percent yields of each precursor (dipyrromethane) of 96% and 77%. UV-Vis colorimetric assays on vanillin-BODIPY against anthracene showed the presence of three isosbestic points at wavelengths of 362 nm, 369 nm, and 379 nm. However, based on the molar concentration graph the change in intensity occurs only at a wavelength of 365 nm. Fluorescent colorimetry studies of anthracene addition to vanillin-BODIPY showed an increased fluorescent intensity, while at p-hydroxy-BODIPY there's a pen. These results show the importance of methoxy groups and polarity in the meso-BODIPY-anthracene interaction. e-module chemistry experiment on fluorescent materials can support the understanding of chemistry at the high school level
