One of the entities that produces affordable assistive devices is Yayasan Kreativitas Difabel Mandiri (YKDM). Initial observations of prosthetic legs showed that there are some issues with the prosthetic legs, including causing back pain and lack of safety. This research aims to develop the design of the knee joint of YKDM's prosthetic leg in order to improve the product's quality and user's the quality of life. Thus, user needs and knee joint design requirements were identified, improved knee joint was designed, prototypes, prototype was tested, and potential prototype improvements was identified in order to achieve the goal of this research. This research was using Design Thinking as its methodology. User needs were obtained using interviews and observations. Ease-impact matrix was used for choosing product concepts. Prototype were produced and tested on users based on the QEHFT questionnaire. Testing was documented in an empathy map. Feedback from testing was used to improve prototypes. Interviews showed that users need a prosthetic leg that is affordable, reliable, widely available raw materials, locks in stance phase, comfortable, mimics normal leg movement, and is easy to produce. Due to these needs, knee joint design requires a single axis type joint, a brake mechanism, a swing control gas spring, and UCBerkeley bench alignment system. The final prototype has almost reached the performance desired by the user, but improvements are still needed. Further improvements that can be made: the use of custom gas springs to reduce the maximum load and accelerate extension movement. text |
