ADSORPTION OF METHYLENE BLUE USING MAGNETITE-ALGINATE CROSS-LINKED BORIC ACID (MAB) COMPOSITE

Methylene blue is a cationic dye that is widely used as a dye in the textile industry. Methylene blue is not easy to degrade in nature because it is a stable dye. Contamination of methylene blue waste can be a cause of water pollution and health problems. One of the methods that can be used to elimi...

Methylene blue is not easy to degrade in nature because it is a stable dye. Contamination of methylene blue waste can be a cause of water pollution and health problems. One of the methods that can be used to eliminate methylene blue is adsorption. The adsorption method has several advantages such as being environmentally friendly, relatively low cost, simple and efficient operation, and reusable adsorbent. Alginate is a biosorbent that can be used as an alternative to remove dye waste, but its use is less effective because it is difficult to separate the adsorbent after the adsorption process. Thus, a supporting material is needed to facilitate the process of separating the adsorbent. In this study, magnetite-alginate with boric acid crosslinker (MAB) was successfully synthesized and characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS, and PSA. Adsorption of methylene blue using 0.05 grams of MAB reached optimum conditions at pH 4 and contact time of 4 hours. The methylene blue adsorption process followed the pseudo second order adsorption kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 261.19 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters produce values ?H = 7.45 kJ/mol and ?S = 0.117 kJ/mol. K indicating the reaction is endothermic and the irregularity of the system increases as well as a negative ?G value indicating the reaction is spontaneous. text
