Description
Summary:Monazite mineral is one of the side result in the tin mining process in Bangka. As one of the rare earth elements (REEs), monazite has not been optimally utilizied. There are several methods used commonly to isolate the REEs, such as solvent extraction, supported liquid membrane technique and the one developed recently, the Solvent Impregnated Resin (SIR) technique. The first step in collecting REEs is the sample of destruction. In this research, the destruction was carried out in a closed system in the present of NaOH. The objective of this research is to find optimum conditions of monazite destruction. Variables optimized here included temperature, time and the ratio of monazite to NaOH. Concentration of REEs in the destructed samples were determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and ICP-AES method. The result showed the sample was optimally destructed at 190 oC for three hours, with the ratio of monazite to NaOH 35:65 . These results were confirmed by using the condition to destruct sample. Under the optimum condition, it was found that the monazite sample contains REEs of 37.6 %, and the percentage of Ce and La is 31.9 % and 13 % respectively.
