HARMONY BETWEEN NATURE, CULTURE, AND THE ESSENCE OF RURAL LIFE: AGRO-RESORT WITH COMMUNITY BASED TOURISM APPROACH IN KULON PROGO

Indonesia is known as an agricultural country with most of the population working in the agriculture sector. Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the nation’s economy. However, there is an imbalance that occurs due to the diminishment of agricultural land in Indonesia, which reaches 150,000 hectares per year. This is due to land use conversion which is mostly for infrastructure development and other means of community life needs. The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport which is located in Temon, Kulon Progo has made Kulon Progo become the gateway for tourists who are aiming to travel to Yogyakarta. However, the construction of the new airport has sparked conflicts among the local community due to the fact that more than 40 hectares of the land was used to be productive land for residents who work as farmers, with a total of 2,700 families affected. The alteration of livelihoods from agrarian (homogeneous) to service (heterogeneous) can be a strategy to improve the local community's economic grade. Yogyakarta is one of the most popular tourism destinations for Indonesians. The main attraction of tourism in Yogyakarta is its own culture, while Kulon Progo itself has natural wonders in the form of rice fields which require the role of architecture to escalate tourist attractiveness. To combine those two potentials, just like the Javanese philosophy "Hamemayu hayuning bawana'' which means beautifying the existing beauty of the world, the author intends to establish architectural interventions with contemporary and modern approach without eliminating the local culture as well as preserving the nature in the form of rice fields. This idea became a part of the main concept of the design. This agro-resort will accommodate tourists needs regarding transit, education and buying-selling activities.
