Description
Summary:Abstract:

Tegalwangi is a well known center for national rattan craft industry and furniture located on southbound of Cirebon. In spite of only 40% of the total national craft export production worth LISS 13.5 million per month, this area has contributed a significant portion of national income. Healthiness of the ample rattan business in Tegalwangi has drawn interests to individuals outside the area. This eventually forms a specific system business of component sub contract method This type of system is efficient since it is responsive to manage overwhelming orders from big companies. The fact of weak business ethics between entrepreneurs results in unfair competition that f irther creates instability in economics progress. The non-optimum role of the association of national furniture and handy craft (Asmindo) leads to situation of market monopoly through plagiarism. Poor understanding of the importance of design has set aside design as unimportant and non-strategic work. Economic impact of the design plagiarism is the price instability i.e. rattan furniture no longer becomes a high price commodities. Social friction due to this plagiarism is the violation of intellectual property rights (HAKI). Evidence of such infringement is the appeal of World Trade Organization (WTO) and even .further the decision of United State Trade Representative (USTR) to place Indonesia into First Priority Watch List that, forces Indonesia to establish a firm Intellectual Property Rights system to avoid embargo sanction. In order to anticipate international pressure, a comprehensive and initiative approach from large companies and subcontractors is required. Industries can no longer expect governmental intervention in constructing rules and law enforcement in Intellectual Property Rights, but internally an initiative must emerge from industries side to adapt to the existing rules as well as external effort in building inter-university network. The required strategy is to optimally stimulate the research environment and development of new Intellectual Right Property-based products. This can be implemented by initially tracing previous works from a design database and exploring traditional richness as a new added value to existing products. To formulate the strategy, a sequence of analysis to related factors is needed that eventually raises a new design which is registeredable and protectable. As final stage the Intellectual Property Rights management in industries is proven to be required to ensure the continuity of design.
