Aligned with the technology evolution, IT-cloud system-integrator, which has been helping customers integrate and manage their complex IT environment on the cloud, also faces challenges in viewing future trends and how they should respond to them. System-integrator in the future IT industry will not only be required to follow the pace of the new technology development, but they also need to observe the industry trend and customer competition. These two capabilities, supported by the firm’s flexibility to readjust the strategy, will help the system-integrator to continuously capture the market opportunity and achieve sustainable business growth. The competition will not just be happening in the customer, but also within the IT system-integrators themselves. Therefore, system-integrator must build its differentiator through innovation, so that the firm could always be ahead of its competitors.
The main purpose of this research is to explore the future scenarios of the IT-cloud system-integrator and propose innovation as part of the recommendation. The research starts with scanning the external environment. This activity is done using the PESTLE framework and it gives a general view of the situation that surrounds the system-integration business. The exploration continues with 1:1 interview with different stakeholders from different managerial levels, to further dive deeper into the various IT-cloud trends covering the macro and transactional environment. There are 7 stakeholders from different companies who give their views about the future IT-cloud trend. The collection of these trends is then inductively analysed through content-analysis to derive the broader themes of the trends which are then used as the driving forces. In addition to trend exploration, this research also covers the internal analysis of the system-integrator, which uses VRIO and Dynamic-capability framework. This analysis helps the researcher to assess the gap and build the implementation plan for the system-integrator.
The content analysis identified 12 driving-forces that don’t have any initial linkage with one another. The researcher then uses a causal-loop-diagram to find the inter-relationship between 1 driving-force and others. Based on the causal-loop and stakeholders’ discussion, 2 driving-forces are finally considered to have high uncertainty and impact on the system-integrator. The customer’s differentiation strategy, whether they would go with innovation or cost-differentiation, would be the first uncertainty. The second uncertainty is the new-customer growth in the system-integrator business. The uncertainty occurred because in the future, customers will have more options rather than just what is offered by the system-integrator, IT-cloud infrastructure. The customers could choose to use cloud-computing or different solutions such as software-as-a-service and-or leveraging their on-premise data-center. The customer’s preferences regarding these uncertainties will determine the market opportunity for the system-integrator. Four scenarios are then developed based on these 2 uncertainties. A narrative is given to imagine the plausibility of each scenario. Innovation, as the high-level recommendation, is finally attached to each scenario. In the last section, the implementation plan is laid out to prepare the system-integrator to respond to the emerging scenario. |
